Truth-Centered Living
"...If ye continue in my word, then are ye my disciples indeed; And ye shall know the truth, and the truth shall make you free. " John 8:31,32

Everyone has their opinion of truth and what it is. Jesus Christ said, "Sanctify them through thy truth: Thy word is truth." That gives us solid ground on which to build. Truth is not subjective nor a relative decision decided upon by arbitrary means or analysis. Truth, like science and math, has a precision and an exactness to it that cannot be argued. It goes beyond the realm of facts. Unlike facts, that can change from moment to moment, truth is eternal and unchanging.

If we want to live the truth then we should go to the fountain head of truth, God's Word. The Bible, although scoffed at and considered ancient history by many, is the source of truth-centered living. This book of life gives us the truth and direction for life while at home or on the road. If we want God's opinion and His answers to life's many questions we can go to His road map for life, the Bible.

Studying and applying the truths from the Bible will reap you untold benefits. Truth-centered living is built on the foundation of a knowledge and belief in the truth. To know the truth is the greatest knowledge. To live the truth is the greatest achievement. Learning to live the principles and precepts in the Bible is the greatest challenge with the greatest rewards you could ever undertake.

Heavenly father, you have given us your Word as a signpost for living, as a road map for life. Thank you God for the simplicity of your Word and your loving encouragement to make it our rule book for life. In Christ Jesus holy name, amen.

A Lamp Unto My Feet
"Thy word is a lamp unto my feet, and a light unto my path." Psalm 119:105

Waking up in the middle of the night to a strange sound, when you're in strange room, in a faraway place can really be disturbing. It may just be the guy across the hall fumbling with his key and talking to himself. Yet that's enough to get you out of bed to do a quick hall check. Then comes the tricky part. Where is everything?

When you're at home the bedside table is just to your right with the phone and the lamp on it. You know your room layout and could maneuver it in your sleep. Therein lies the problem. This is a hotel room. Where is the bedside table, the phone, the lamp? Is this the typical Courtyard by Marriott arrangement, or the always different design of every other major hotel chain across America?

Slowly, cautiously I make my way to the bathroom and turn on a light. After quickly checking the hall I'm back in bed and thinking to myself...1 should be better prepared for situations like this. Knowing that the world would give us plenty of dark moments in strange places God provided us with the light that never burns out nor needs replacement...the Bible.

The Gideons provide Bibles for hotel rooms across the country. Because of the Gideons you can always find a spiritual "night light," a Bible, in your room. The light and understanding from God's Word quickly dispels the darkness that sometimes clouds the mind.

Heavenly Father, you gave us your word as a lamp for our feet and a light for our paths. Thank you for being prepared for us and preparing us for all of our adventures. In Christ Jesus name, amen.

Fear Not!
"Yea, though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death, I will fear no evil:" Psalm 23:4a

As the plane taxied out to the runway for takeoff went through my normal procedure of praying for the trip and the safety of all on board. Immediately after saying 'amen' there was a strange grinding rumble from the landing gear on the right side of the plane. I was somewhat unsettled.

The plane stopped. No noise. After a few moments we slowly began to move toward the runway. Once again as the brakes were applied, that same sound increased my uneasiness. Was I imagining this? I reminded myself that this was not the Twilight Zone and God was- on my side.

Before my finger could reach the call button the silence was broken with an announcement from the cockpit. "This is your captain speaking. Folks it appears we may have some mechanical problems with one of our landing gears. Too many little lights are going on up here. Your safety is our primary concern. Please be patient as we figure out our next plan of action. Thank you."

I breathed a deep sight of relief. I, in turn said 'thank you, thank you, thank you' to my wonderful heavenly Father and settled back into my seat for plan B to be initiated. Over the next few hours as we slowly proceeded through the deplaning process, I had time to reflect on some biblical records. Over and over God reminds us, "fear not, I am with you."

Heavenly Father, even though we may walk or fly through the valley of the shadow of death we need not fear. Thanks for reminding us of how you take care of us and protect us on all of our travels. In Christ's name. Amen.

An Attitude of Gratitude
"In everything give thanks: for this is the will of God in Christ Jesus concerning you." I Thessalonians 5:18

A wealthy Christian business man, who had given over half of his income to the church, shared some of his wisdom with me. He said if a person had a roof over his head, clothes on his back, food in his stomach and good health they should be very thankful. Growing up during the depression years, he could speak with authority.

Years ago on a business trip I visited several small towns in the southwest. I can remember one town in particular where I had to spend two nights. There were only two little old run-down hotels in the town. I tried to pick what appeared to be the better of the two. It must have been a mistake.

Opening the door to my room I immediately noticed the 20 year old shag (or was it rag) carpet. There were spots where spills of one kind or another had discolored and matted the carpet fibers together. There was also the hint of animal odor that would occasionally twinge my nose. The bed squeaked, the sink dripped and the toilet paper was industrial strength thickness and texture. Yes, these are the experiences from which great stories grow.

Then I remembered the words of my old friend. I did stay thankful for a roof over my head, food in my stomach, clothes on my back and my good health. Living with an attitude of gratitude keeps us thankful for the simple things.

I come to you God with a heart of thankfulness and gratitude for the many blessings I have. You are the supplier of all that I need. Thank you for my home, my physical sustenance, my clothing and my health. In Jesus Christ name, amen.
